🌟 DIY “Weather in a Jar” – A Sensory & Craft Activity for Toddlers

Theme: Weather + Sensory + Craft
Age Group: 3 to 4 years
Parent Help: Light supervision
Learning Focus: Weather types, colors, sensory textures

🧰 Materials Needed:

  • Plastic or glass jar with lid (safe & clear)

  • Cotton balls (for clouds)

  • Blue food coloring + water (sky)

  • Yellow pom-poms or paper circles (sun)

  • Silver foil or shiny paper (lightning)

  • Clear hair gel or shaving cream (cloud texture)

  • Glitter (for rain or snow sparkle)

  • Small cutouts (raindrops, snowflakes, sun)

  • Glue, spoon, and safety scissors

🧪 How to Make “Weather in a Jar”:

  1. Create the Sky:
Fill the jar halfway with water. Add 2–3 drops of blue food coloring. Stir gently.

  2. Add Clouds:
Pull apart cotton balls and gently place them inside the jar to float. You can mix in some shaving cream for a fluffier effect.

  3. Make It Rain or Snow:
Add silver glitter or tiny foil pieces. These will float and mimic snowflakes or raindrops.

  4. Sunny Side Up:
Glue a yellow pom-pom to the inside lid or the outside of the jar to represent the sun.

  5. Add Lightning or Thunder:
Stick silver foil zigzags inside the jar for a stormy vibe.

  6. Seal & Shake Gently:
Close the lid tightly (you can even hot glue it shut if needed). Kids can shake and watch their weather swirl and settle.

💡 Bonus Tip:

Let the child point to what weather they see today and try to “make” it inside the jar! This encourages observation and learning about daily climate.
